Prayagraj: Former soldier shot his daughter-in-law and committed suicide by being struck by a train; was granted bail the previous year.


Shivmurat Tiwari, an ex-soldier, hailed from Karehda village in the Karaili police station area. His job was with the Indian Army. About twenty years ago, he retired from the army and moved to Sarangapur, his in-law’s hamlet in the Ghurpur region.


An elderly man lost his life on Monday morning when he was struck by a train on the Mumbai-Howrah railway route, which runs in front of Sarangapur hamlet. He turned out to be Sarangapur resident Shivmurat Tiwari (80). The Indian Army had retired him. Following up on the information, Ghurpur police sent the deceased for post-mortem.


Originally, Shivmurat Tiwari was from the Karaili police station area’s Karehda hamlet. His job was with the Indian Army. About twenty years ago, he left the army and moved to Sarangapur, his in-law’s hamlet in the Ghurpur district. The army has also retired his sons Rana Tiwari and Rajiv Tiwari.

The dead man was in prison for killing Rajiv Tiwari’s wife Anju, his own daughter-in-law. He is said to have killed his daughter-in-law with his licensed firearm during a family argument early on December 1, 2016. Having killed his daughter-in-law, he carried the murder weapon to the Ghurpur police station himself. The locals claim that just last year was he freed from prison on bond.
