From today, a ban on women covering their faces completely with hijab, burqa or any other means in public places has come into effect in Switzerland. According to news agency Reuters, a fine of up to 1000 Swiss francs i.e. approximately 96 thousand rupees will be imposed for violating this law.
In the referendum held in Switzerland in 2021, 51.21% citizens voted in favor of banning the burqa. After this, a law was made regarding the ban on burqa, which is starting from today i.e. 1 January 2025 (New Year).
Before Switzerland, laws regarding this have also been made in Belgium, France, Denmark, Austria, Netherlands, and Bulgaria. After this law, women will not be able to cover their faces completely in public places like public offices, public transport, restaurants, shops and other places.
There will be relaxation in places of worship and other religious places.
The law was made in 2022
In 2022, the National Council, the lower house of the Swiss Parliament, voted on a law to ban face coverings. During this period, 151 members voted in favor and 29 members voted against. After which a law was made regarding this.
This proposal was put forward by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party (SVP), while the center and Greens parties were against it. Some people say that this law unfairly targets Muslim women. Those supporting this law claim that this is a necessary step for cultural value and security at public places.
Till 2021 only 30 women wore niqab
According to a 2021 research by Lucerne University, hardly anyone wears a burqa in Switzerland. Only 30 women wear niqab here. As of 2021, only about 5% of Switzerland’s population of 8.6 million were Muslims, most of whom are from Turkey, Bosnia and Kosovo.
Earlier in 2009, the construction of minarets was banned only through referendum. This proposal was also put forward by the SVP party. In this proposal it was said that these minarets are a sign of Islamization.
Burqa is prevalent in South Asia and niqab is prevalent in Europe.
Burqa is a type of veil, which is mostly worn by Muslim women of Afghanistan and South Asia. Burqa is a single piece of cloth, which covers the entire body. In this, there is usually only a thin mesh near the face, through which the woman can see outside.
Whereas in Europe and Gulf countries, niqab is more popular instead of burqa. Niqab is also a kind of veil, which usually covers only the lower half of the face and the area around the eyes remains open.
The scarf that covers the head, ears and neck is called Hijab, in which the face remains open. It is used in most Muslim countries.
