Neither Hardik Pandya…nor Shubman Gill, Team India may get a new ODI vice-captain

New Delhi. After a disappointing performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the Indian team will hope to bounce back in the T20 and ODI series against England. After the series played at home, Team India has to enter the Champions Trophy. This ICC event will be played in Pakistan from 19 February to 9 March. India had refused to play in Pakistan and now it will play its matches in Dubai. It has been decided to keep Rohit Sharma as the captain of India for the 2025 Champions Trophy. This was announced a few days after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup.

There is a lot of news in the media about who will be the vice-captain of the Indian team in the Champions Trophy. Shubman Gill was included in India’s leadership group after the T20 World Cup and was made the vice-captain of the white-ball teams. Hardik Pandya who was Rohit’s deputy in the 2024 World Cup and 2023 ODI World Cup. He was sidelined. Now it seems that Shubman will also not be given this responsibility.

Times of India has reported that there may be changes in the ODI team for the upcoming tournaments. According to TOI, Indian team’s fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will be the vice-captain of India for the 2025 Champions Trophy. Bumrah was the vice-captain in the ODI series against South Africa in early 2022. He has also captained the T20 series against Ireland in 2023.

Jasprit Bumrah, who commanded the team in the recent Border Gavaskar Trophy, started captaincy in the only Test played in England in the year 2022. BCCI can announce the team for the series to be played against England and the Champions Trophy this week. Bumrah can be rested for the entire England series.
