Yuvraj Singh hit fifty, Mayank Agarwal hit a century, these teams reached quarterfinals

New Delhi. Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Vidarbha and Baroda qualified directly for the quarter-finals after finishing first in their respective groups in the Vijay Hazare Trophy cricket tournament on Sunday (January 5). The top two teams from each group reach the knockout. In these, the team finishing first in the group directly makes it to the quarter-finals.

Ishan Kishan’s team Jharkhand defeated Goa by 31 runs in Group A, thanks to Utkarsh Singh’s inning of 102 runs in 120 balls, but despite this, it could not make it to the knockout. In this group, Gujarat stood first while Haryana stood second and Jharkhand stood third. At the same time, in another match, Gujarat defeated Odisha by 100 runs. Batting first, Gujarat team was all out for 252 runs in 47.5 overs despite the contributions of Urvil Patel (45), Hemang Patel (48) and Ravi Bishnoi (40).

In the match played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Maharashtra team remained on top in Group B despite losing to Railways by 32 runs. With the help of half-centuries from Yuvraj Singh (79) and Suraj Ahuja (55), Railways made a challenging score of 284 runs for seven wickets and then bowled out Maharashtra for 252 runs. Like Group B topper Maharashtra, second-placed Rajasthan also concluded its group stage campaign with a six-run defeat to Sikkim at the DY Patil Stadium.

In Group C matches, Karnataka and Punjab registered big wins against Nagaland and Puducherry respectively in Ahmedabad. Mumbai team finished third in this group and thus missed qualifying for the knockouts. Karnataka, chasing the target of 206 runs, defeated Nagaland by nine wickets. From his side, experienced opener Mayank Agarwal scored unbeaten 116 runs in 119 balls, while Shreyas Gopal took four wickets for 24 runs.

After bowling out Delhi for 180 runs in Group E, Baroda defeated Delhi by five wickets with 16 balls remaining. Opener Arpit Rana scored the highest 75 runs for Delhi. Bengal lost to Madhya Pradesh by six wickets in another match but registered a total of four wins in the group stage and made it to the knockouts by finishing second.
