According to the information received (US time), members of CUCD met on Tuesday evening. This board has a total of 7 members. Out of which six members agreed to name the school after Jaswant Singh Khalra and voted in its favor. While one member avoided voting.
Nandeep Singh Chann, chairman of the Central Unified School Board, said that it is likely that this will be the first government school in America, named after a Sikh person.

The construction work of Chairman Nandeep Singh Sa School has already started and it will be inaugurated in September 2025. Know who is Jaswant Singh Khala
Jaswant Singh Khalda was a courageous and dedicated human rights activist. Who raised their voice against the atrocities and human rights violations against Sikhs in Punjab during the 1980s and 1990s. He revealed that thousands of Sikh youth were taken into illegal custody at that time, killed in fake encounters and their bodies were cremated secretly.
Khalda had exposed these disappearance and killings being carried out by the Punjab Police and the administration. He visited the cremation ghats of Amritsar at that time and gathered information that more than 6,000 bodies were secretly cremated there. He also shared this information on international forums, which raised questions on India’s human rights records.
Murdered in 1995
Khalda had to pay the brunt of fighting for the rights of Sikhs. The family alleges that on 6 September 1995, the police kidnapped Khala from his house. He was then harassed and murdered in police custody.
The police also did not register an FIR in the case. After which, Jaswant’s wife gave the petition in the Supreme Court and the court ordered the CBI to investigate. After which four policemen have been sentenced to life imprisonment for his murder.
