California. The fire in the forests of Los Angeles, America’s most populous county, has taken a terrible form. The number of deaths so far in this terrible fire has exceeded 15. Property worth Rs 16 lakh crore was destroyed, while more than 10,000 buildings were damaged. This fire completely turned many people’s houses into ashes. They cannot believe that their dream home was destroyed in a moment. ABC reporter Zohreen Shah is included among these victims. This forest fire destroyed the heavenly home in front of them forever. He himself has expressed his pain on Instagram.
He wrote, “My house was destroyed in the fire. Everything is over. We started shifting there only last week. Again and again, I told Rishi (husband) that I cannot believe that this heavenly home is ours. We spent only one night there. Just one day. That house was absolutely perfect. It was magical. We thought that we would spend our whole lives in the same house. Just five minutes from PCH (Pacific Coast Highway), yet it felt like we were on another planet. Deer came near the house, the birdsong sounded like a tropical island, and the view of the ocean was like a California dream. “We had peach, nectarine, lemon and avocado trees – and a small enclosure for lettuce and strawberries, which was safe from wild animals.”
Down payment for house given with 20% savings
Zohreen Shah further wrote, “But this was more than everything. It was the result of Rishi’s six-year search for the perfect coastal home. They found it in November and we bought it on Christmas Eve. In my childhood, my parents did not have their own house. Like many people, I worked, saved, and made sacrifices so I could have what my parents didn’t have. I cook most of my meals at home, don’t have kids yet, and don’t travel for fun. “That’s why, over the years, I saved enough for 20% of our down payment.”
‘Sometimes I get scared like I’m a four-year-old girl’
She wrote, I was feeling very proud. And then – just like that – after years of hard work and saving, it was all gone. Friends say that now we can make it as per our choice. But for me, it was already perfect. I have to be honest. As much as I am eager to make it happen again with Rishi, we are equally sad. I know we are very lucky – we are safe, and we haven’t had anything in the house yet that has emotional connections to us. But sometimes I feel strong and wise, and sometimes I feel scared like I’m a four-year-old girl. I am also afraid that it is not over yet.”
Zoharin Shah raised some questions
Taking her point forward, ABC reporter Shah also put forward some questions and demands before the people. He said, “I have questions and demands: Insurance companies should give their rights to policyholders. The resettlement process should not take so long. Permit offices need more staff. It appears that there were many opportunities where this incident could have been prevented. California has gubernatorial elections in 2026, presidential elections in 2028 and the Los Angeles Olympics. “Politicians will have to show results quickly.”
Officials have blamed strong winds and dry vegetation for dangerous wildfire conditions in Southern California. Exceptionally powerful winds, reaching speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour during the night, further fanned the fire. California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency and asked thousands of people to evacuate due to the rapidly spreading fire.
