New Delhi. The Indian team to play in the Champions Trophy will be selected on Saturday. There will be a selection committee meeting in Mumbai in which the 15-member team will be selected. India’s ODI captain Rohit Sharma and selection committee head Ajit Agarkar will announce the team after the meeting. After this he will answer the questions of the media. The Agarkar-led committee will also select the team for the three-match ODI series to be held next month, which will be played before the Champions Trophy.
India has been placed in Group B along with hosts Pakistan, New Zealand and Bangladesh. This prestigious tournament is being held for the first time since 2017. The tournament will start on February 19 with the match between Pakistan and New Zealand in Karachi. India will start its campaign against Bangladesh in Dubai a day later. Rohit is expected to captain the team but there is concern about playing Jasprit Bumrah.
Bumrah had a back spasm problem during the fifth and final Test of the Australia tour earlier this month. BCCI has not yet given any statement regarding his latest injury. Recently, Bumrah had refuted a report regarding his competitive comeback, advising him not to rush and take rest. Bumrah posted on X, “I know it is easy to spread fake news, but this made me laugh.”
Will Karun Nair get a chance?
It will be interesting to see whether the BCCI selectors consider Karun Nair’s name for this tournament or the ODI against England as he has been in excellent form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Nair has scored 752 runs in seven innings in the domestic ODI tournament. 33-year-old Nair has played two ODIs so far, the last of which was against Zimbabwe in June 2016.
You can be part of a successful team
Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has shown explosive performance in the last few years, may get a place in the team as a backup opener. Jaiswal has played Test and T20 matches for India, but has not made his ODI debut yet. In the recent Test series played in Australia, Yashasvi was the highest run-scorer for India. In 5 matches, he scored 391 runs with one century and two half-centuries.
