Considering the threat from China, this is a big update in Taiwan’s military. However, some complaints have surfaced regarding the weight and effectiveness of the new tanks.

During the military exercise, the soldiers arrived in armored vehicles. While Apache and S-70 helicopters kept hovering above. Along with keeping an eye on the enemies, they also kept firing. Chuang Yuan-cheng, army captain of the 542nd Armored Brigade, says the equipment Taiwan currently operates involves communications officers on the ground to coordinate air strikes. He said, ‘This makes it possible to guide the helicopter so that attacks from ground and air are effective.’

What else will happen in practice?
During the exercise on Wednesday, the Army will showcase its Patriot III anti-missile system, which is aimed at countering one of China’s most powerful weapons. Apart from this, anti-submarine exercises will be conducted near Kaohsiung, Taiwan’s largest port, on Thursday. This port is very important. In case of war, this is considered the best place for China to supply supplies to its army. Every year Taiwan organizes this exercise. It is held before the Lunar New Year holiday, to reassure the Taiwanese people of stopping attacks by China and to encourage military recruitment.

Big crisis facing Taiwan
America supplies weapons to Taiwan. Taiwan has ordered weapons systems worth about $20 billion from America. It is also upgrading its M-16 fighter planes and developing its submarines. Taiwan has also extended mandatory military conscription for one year. However, Taiwan’s government has warned that the defense budget could be cut by up to 28 percent due to new legal amendments under consideration. Because this amendment can change the way of distribution of funds between the central and local governments.
