At a time when everyone was expecting more off-breaks from you than ever before, you bowled a carrom ball that stunned everyone. However, everyone understands that this must have been a difficult decision for you too, especially after your illustrious career playing for India. Please accept my hearty congratulations on a wonderful career that has been full of talent, hard work and putting the team above everything else.
PM Modi further wrote, ‘As we say goodbye to international cricket, we will miss jersey number 99 a lot. Cricket lovers will miss the hope they used to feel when you came to the crease to bowl. It always felt like you were weaving a web around your opponents that could trap a victim at any moment. Among the 765 international wickets taken by you in all formats, all are special. The record of winning the most Player of the Series awards in Test matches shows how much influence you have had on the team’s success in Tests over the last several years.
PM wrote in the end, ‘People are often remembered for some great shot played by them. But you have the unique distinction of being remembered for both a shot and a leave in a T20 World Cup match in 2022. Your winning shot gave a lot of enthusiasm to the people. The way you released the ball early and allowed it to become a wide ball shows your wisdom. This brought out your honesty and commitment even in adverse circumstances. We all remember how you came back to the team to contribute to the team despite your mother being hospitalized.
