TRAI Strict on Spam Calls Orders Reliance Jio Airtel Jio Other Service Providers to Tighten Rules


TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti has announced that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India will further tighten the rules to curb harassing and spam calls in view of the increasing complaints from users. The regulator has contacted all service providers and telemarketers in the country, including Reliance Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL, on the issue. Initial steps to address the problem include implementing technical solutions for traceability and blocking bulk calls from enterprise customers using 10-digit numbers. Apart from this, a mixed committee of regulators is focusing on dealing with fraud and scams. At the same time, TRAI is focusing on spam control, while law enforcement is handling violators and criminals.

news agency PTI (via NDTVAccording to the ), TRAI chairman said on Wednesday that the telecom regulator will review and further strengthen the rules to curb annoying spam calls. Spam call action is getting top priority on TRAI’s agenda amid growing complaints from users about unsolicited communications from unauthorized telemarketers.

“We have had discussions with service providers on spam calls and that is the next thing on our table. We will work seriously… We will plug any loophole that people find in the existing rules to tighten the spam call issue,” Lahoti said on the sidelines of India SatCom 2024 organised by Broadband India Forum (BIF).

TRAI held a meeting on Tuesday and ordered service providers and their telemarketers to come up with better measures to curb bulk communication using voice calls. All service providers, especially telecom and their delivery telemarketers have been asked to take action in this regard as soon as possible.

Lahoti says that TRAI plays its role in controlling spam calls. Whereas, law enforcement handles fraud or scammers.
