There was an option to change the city, not the exam center. What could be NTA’s reply in SC on the NEET controversy? Know the full details

NEET-UG 2024: The National Testing Agency (NTA) may inform the Supreme Court that candidates are not given the option to ‘change exam centre’. Instead, they can only apply to ‘change exam city’, which may still be rejected by the agency. News18 has learned that the NTA’s submission will be in response to the court’s query on how many students have opted to change exam centres to appear for NEET UG 2024.

While hearing the petitions on NEET UG on July 18, the Supreme Court had asked the NTA to submit the details of the candidates who have changed the exam center and their respective results in the next hearing of the case on Monday (July 22). According to the NTA, candidates can apply for changes or corrections in the fields in the application form, which also includes application for correction in the exam city. NTA had received about 1.25 lakh applications from across the country to change the fields in the form. According to the information received by News18, the agency will clarify on July 22 how many of these candidates had applied to change the exam city and what were the results of these candidates.

In the case of Godhra, where irregularities are alleged, the NTA had told the court during the hearing on July 18 that 34 candidates had applied for change of exam city, out of which only 14 applications were accepted for correction. Out of these 14 candidates, only one has passed the exam. The agency has told the court that there were only two exam centres in Godhra, where 1,860 and 654 students had appeared for the exam on May 5 when NEET-UG was held across the country.

The agency said that in the case of Godhra, where an attempt was made to manipulate the OMR sheets of some candidates, it was foiled through prompt action taken by the district administration. It also said that an analysis of the results of candidates from these two centres does not show unusually high marks, which would be above the average in case of manipulation.

The Supreme Court is hearing petitions seeking re-examination of NEET UG this year, amid allegations of paper leaks and irregularities at several places. Allegations of malpractices have been reported from certain centres in Bihar, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. NEET UG 2024 was conducted on May 5 at 4,750 centres in 571 cities, with over 23 lakh students appearing for the exam. The results were released on June 4.
