In a school in South Africa, the teacher cut the religious thread (Kalava) from the hand of a Hindu student. The Hindu community has demanded action against the teacher, describing it as insensitive and irresponsible. According to media reports, the incident occurred last week at Drekensburg Secondary School in Quajulu-Natal state.
The South African Hindu Mahasabha (SAHMS) raised the matter to the education authorities. He says that students are not allowed to wear cultural and religious symbols in the school.
SAHMS said that he is investigating the incident of religious intolerance in the school, but is facing difficulty, because the student is afraid that if he cooperates in the investigation, he will be harassed further.
Sahms president Ashwin Trikamji told the media- the principal of the school told that the student had rings and threads in his hand, but he did not respond in writing yet.
Court order cannot prevent religious practices from obeying
Trikamji said that a school in South Africa had stopped a Hindu student from wearing Nathuni (nose ring) a few years ago. After this, the court while giving a verdict in favor of the student had said that no one can be prevented from following her cultural or religious practices.
The Constitution of South Africa prohibits discrimination on any issue, including religion. The government has also established the Human Rights Commission and Cultural, Religious and Language Rights Commission regarding this. Trikamji alleged that the Ministry of Education of South Africa had failed to promote religious and cultural tolerance.

About 1.5 million Indian origin population in South Africa
On the other hand, Muji Mahalambi, spokesperson of the Education Department of Quajulu-Natal State, said- Our department always takes care that the constitution is the highest law in our country and if any school violates it, it will not be accepted.
The issue of religious, apartheid and land acquisition in South Africa is considered quite sensitive. South Africa has a population of about 1.5 million Indian origin.
