China and Panama signed a BRI agreement in 2017.
Panama President Raul Mulino said on Sunday that Panama will not renew the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) agreement with China. Panama signed this agreement with China in 2017. Now it is expected to end before its time.
Mulino has expressed a desire to work on new investment with the US. These include projects related to infrastructure. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived on a tour of Panama on Sunday itself. This is the first Panama tour of an American diplomat after Trump became President.
Talking to the media, Mulino described Rubio’s journey as an opening new gates in relations. However, the matter of not arguing about the conflict of the Panama Canal was also repeated. He said that Rubio has been talked about on the canal about American concerns related to China.
Rubio himself was welcomed by Mulino.
America warned to take necessary steps
Following the statement of Mulin, the US State Department shared details of negotiations between the two countries. It mentions Rubio’s warning to Panama on the issue of China.
The report said that China’s control over the Panama Canal means that the US will take necessary steps to protect its rights. In 1977, the US gave a treaty under the control of Panama.
According to the agreement, if the operation of the canal is disrupted due to any foreign strength, the US may intervene.
However, Mulino on Sunday denied that the US would take military action to again occupy the canal.
Trump threatens to withdraw Panama Canal
US President Donald Trump had threatened to re -take the Panama Canal under American control last month before the swearing in. This canal is part of the Caribbean country Panama. The canal was controlled by America till 1999.
Trump alleged that “Panama is charging more fees from the US to use this canal. In addition, China is increasing the influence of China.”
Addressing a rally of supporters in the US state of Arizona, Trump said that he would not allow the canal to go into the wrong hands.
After the rally, Trump also posted an AI generated picture on his social media account. In this picture, there was an American flag in the middle of the Panama Canal. In the caption of the picture, Trump wrote ‘Welcome to the United States Canal’. This means welcome to the United States Canal.
Plan to connect 70 countries through Bri
China’s belt and road is Initiative, Bri, also known as the new silk route. This is the connectivity project of many countries. Under the BRI, there is a plan to connect 70 countries in Asia, Europe, Africa by rail, road and sea route. China wants to create ports, naval bases and monitoring posts in the Indian Ocean or Castly India.
Through BRI, China is giving huge loans to many countries. He occupies their ports when the debt is not returned. This is the biggest project ever launched by any country.
