The tenure of the Army Chief in Pakistan has now been increased from 3 years to 5 years. The government of Pakistan made this amendment in the law on Monday. Along with this, the current Army Chief General Asim Munir will also continue in the post till 2027. Earlier his tenure was to end next year in 2025.
Apart from the Army Chief, the tenure of other senior commanders of the Pakistani Army has also been extended. Defense Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif had proposed amendment to the Pakistan Army Act 1952. It has been passed by House Speaker Ayaz Sadiq.
According to news agency Reuters, this step of Shahbaz government is being seen as an attempt to woo senior army officers. According to Geo News, it took about 16 minutes to pass this amendment in the Senate.
Defense Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif had proposed amendment to the Pakistan Army Act 1952.
MPs from Imran’s party said – the law is not in the interest of the country
This amendment is being considered a big blow for former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his party. Actually, Imran blames the army for his ouster from power. They have also demanded action against him.
During the session in the National Assembly, Imran’s party PTI MP Omar Ayub said that passing the law in Parliament without debate is actually like crushing it. This is not good for both the country and our army. MPs from Khan’s party criticized the bill during the Parliament session.
In fact, people of Imran’s party blame the army for his ouster from power. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been in jail since the month of August, has been at odds with top army officers several times. He had accused senior army officers of ousting him from power in the year 2022.
Imran Khan has repeatedly accused Army Chief General Asim Munir of conspiring to topple his government.
Imran had said- Jungle rule in Pakistan, Army Chief is its king.
Khan’s party had won the most seats in the February elections, but still could not achieve a majority. Fawad Chaudhary, leader of Imran’s own party, had said a few months ago that if Khan makes a deal with the army, he can become Prime Minister.
In such a situation, PM Shahbaz is in danger from those who have brought him back to power. Earlier, Imran had said that jungle raj is going on in Pakistan. The king of this jungle is Army Chief General Asim Munir. Whatever happens here happens according to them.
