You must have heard a lot of news about misbehavior of passengers inside the plane. But what if the pilot himself indulges in misbehavior and that too with his fellow pilot… Something similar has happened in SriLankan Airlines. Here two pilots deployed in a flight clashed with each other. Their fight escalated so much that the captain threw his lady co-pilot out of the cockpit. Regarding this incident, Sri Lanka Airlines said that the accused flight captain has been suspended and investigation into the matter is going on.
The incident occurred on September 21, 2024, on a SriLankan flight flying from Sydney, Australia to Colombo, Sri Lanka. During this 10-hour journey on the Airbus A330, the woman got up from her seat to go to the washroom in the co-pilot cabin. This made the pilots angry.
Why did the altercation happen?
Actually, the woman pilot had not asked any other attendant to come to the cockpit in her place before going to the washroom, whereas leaving a pilot alone in the cockpit is a violation of ‘Standard Operating Procedures’ i.e. SOP. There was an altercation between the two pilots on this matter, after which the female pilot got up and went to the washroom.
When she returned from the washroom, she found the cockpit door closed. In such a situation, the lady co-pilot requested to open the door, but the pilot did not agree. This led to an argument between the two pilots and the matter escalated so much that other passengers and crew members of the flight also came to know. A senior flight attendant had to talk to the pilot through the intercom system to convince him to open the door and allow the co-pilot to return to his seat.
After this the flight somehow landed safely in Colombo. 297 passengers could board this flight. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of Sri Lanka has started investigating the matter. SriLankan Airlines said in a statement, ‘The airline is fully cooperating with the authorities. The Captain has been grounded until the investigation is completed.
