Now you can see the ‘Vaghnakh’ with which Shivaji ripped apart the stomach of Afzal Khan, you just have to do this

Pune. The ‘Vaghnakh’ with which Shivaji killed Bijapur’s Sardar Afzal Khan by ripping his stomach has now become available for public viewing. A special hall to display the ‘Vagh Nakh’ of the great warrior king was inaugurated in a grand ceremony on Friday at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Museum in Satara district of Maharashtra. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar also attended the ceremony.

‘Vagh Nakh’ is a weapon shaped like a tiger’s claw, which was used by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to kill Afzal Khan, the commander of the Bijapur Sultanate in 1659. It is said that Afzal Khan had deceitfully called Shivaji for an agreement to kill him. But sensing his trick, Shivaji made full preparations for his safety in advance. To foil Afzal Khan’s conspiracy, Shivaji killed him by tearing his stomach with the Vaghnakh.

The ‘Vagh Nakh’ was brought here from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London under an agreement made by the state government. The weapon, an iconic part of the heroic tales of the founder of the Maratha Empire, will be available for public exhibition at the Satara Museum for the next seven months. Addressing a programme titled ‘ShivshastraShauryagatha’, Fadnavis said it was a historic day for the state.

Fadnavis, while targeting some historians and opposition leaders, said, “Some people in our country have a habit of creating controversy over everything. But this disease is not new. Even Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had to face such tendencies but he established ‘Raiteche Rajya’ (people’s state).”
