JNU to Revert to Traditional Entrance Exams for PhD Admissions

JNU to Revert to Traditional Entrance Exams for PhD Admissions
Presently JNU PhD entrance exam is conducted by NTA.

Concerned about honesty, Jawahralal Nehru University (JNU) is considering going back to its conventional in-house entrance tests for PhD admissions, therefore renouncing the National Testing Agency (NTA)-conducted UGC NET exam. This review started with the sudden cancelation of the June 2024 UGC NET test. The NTA had been doing computer-based assessments for PhD admissions for three years, a practice under growing criticism from the academic community.

JNU recently adopted NET scores for admissions, therefore matching the National Education Policy 2020. But once the UGC NET exam was canceled, JNU’s vice chancellor, Santishree D. Pandit, started talking about bringing back the university’s own admission test. The JNU Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) welcomes this action as a validation of their long-standing viewpoint on admission policies.

JNU, Delhi University, BHU, and Jamia Millia Islamia used the NTA to past-due the PhD entrance exam. From October 26 to October 31 last year, the NTA administered the PhD entrance exam to nearly 35,000 applicants showing up at 114 centres spread over 86 Indian cities. But the delayed CUET UG result announcement has caused the undergraduate admission process at JNU not yet started. Late starting of the admission procedure could affect the academic session.
