Britain’s first turbaned Sikh MP Tanmanjit Singh Dhesi has been elected chairman of the new Parliament’s Defence Committee. Tanmanjit Singh is originally from Amritsar and Jalandhar in Punjab. Dhesi was elected after voting yesterday.

The Labour Party MP got 320 votes out of 563. His rival Labour Party MP Derek Twigg could get only 243 votes. After winning the vote, he was elected chairman of the Defense Committee.

He was stopped at Amritsar airport upon his arrival in India
Sikh MP Tanmanjit Singh Dhesi in the UK was stopped at Amritsar International Airport on his return from England on 3 August 2023. He was questioned for about two hours at the airport. After which he was let go. He arrived in Amritsar from Birmingham in Air India flight number AI-118. When he checked out from Amritsar airport, he was stopped by immigration officials.
Tanmanjit Singh Dhesi, who reached Amritsar, did not have sufficient documents. He did not have an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card. Due to this, he was stopped.
Dhesi has been an MP for three terms in the UK
Tanmanjit Singh Dhesi belongs to the British Labour Party. He has been elected as an MP in the UK from Saloog constituency since 8 June 2017. Dhesi was the first turbaned Sikh MP in the UK. Since then, he has been raising the issues of Sikhs in the UK. This time too, he won the election and has become an MP in the UK for the third time.
Dhesi’s father used to run a construction company in the UK
Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi was born on 17 August 1978 in Slough, UK to Indian parents. He spent his early years in Chalvey, Slough. His father Jaspal Singh runs a construction company in the UK and was the chairman of the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara in Gravesend, Kent. Which is the most prominent gurdwara in the country.
Dhesi attended primary school in Jalandhar, Punjab, India during his childhood. According to him, this move helped him strengthen his character and develop a sense of discipline. He also credits his early schooling in Punjab for his ability to connect with South Asians around the world. Because it helped him develop a strong awareness of his ethnicity.
Dhesi then returned to the UK at the age of nine and continued his schooling in Gravesend. He also served as head boy there. He later studied at three of the UK’s most prestigious universities, Oxford, Cambridge and University College London. Tanmanjeet Singh is fluent in eight languages, including Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, French and English. Apart from this, he also has a good knowledge of German, Italian and Latin.
