Helping ASEAN countries in times of need is part of India’s Act East Policy.

India has sent relief material worth $1 million (about Rs 8.4 crore) to Vietnam to help it in the floods and landslides caused by Typhoon Yagi. India has named it Operation Sadbhav. Under this operation, India has sent a total of 35 tonnes of relief material like water filters, water containers, blankets, kitchen utensils and solar lanterns.

This material was sent by the Air Force’s C17 aircraft on Sunday night. After the damage caused by Yagi in Vietnam, Prime Minister Modi and External Affairs Minister Jaishankar had expressed sympathy to the people of Vietnam. Apart from Vietnam, India has also sent relief material to Myanmar and Laos affected by storm Yagi.

On September 10, Lang Nu village was buried under mud due to a landslide in Lao Cai province.

At around 6 am on Tuesday, mud and rocks came crashing down from a mountain 500 metres away, burying the entire village. There were 37 houses in this village, in which 158 people lived. After the landslide, the local people were able to take 17 injured people to the hospital.

According to VN Express, bodies of 42 people have been recovered. Around 50 people are missing.

The most powerful storm in 3 decades Typhoon Yagi, which arose from the South China Sea, moved towards Vietnam on 3 September. Two days later, it turned into a super typhoon, due to which winds started blowing at a speed of 201 km/h. Typhoon Yagi hit the northern coast of Vietnam on 8 September. After hitting the coast, the speed of the winds reduced to 149 km/h.

According to the Meteorological Department, Typhoon Yagi is the most powerful storm in Asia this year. Such a powerful storm has hit Vietnam after three decades. Heavy rains after the storm have caused floods and landslides in the northern parts of the country including the capital Hanoi.
