IND Vs BAN: When Pathan’s magic worked, Bangladesh was embarrassed, the 11th number batsman made the top score of the innings

New Delhi. Chennai’s Chepauk ground is ready to host the Bangladesh team on its tour to India. The first match of the two-Test series between the two countries (India vs Bangladesh) will be played from Thursday, 19 September. After defeating Pakistan 2-0 in its home ground, the Bangladeshi team that reached India is hopeful of a good performance this time. Captain Nazmul Hussain Shanto has even said that he wants to repeat the result of the series against Pakistan against Rohit Sharma’s Team India. However, this claim seems more like an exercise of overconfidence and boosting the morale of the team.

There are valid reasons for this, the Indian team is ruling the roost in all three formats of cricket. It is the world’s No. 2 team in Tests and No. 1 in ODIs and T20s. The team is balanced on both batting and bowling fronts and it has not lost a Test series on home grounds since 2012. The record of Bangladesh’s performance against world cricket’s ‘powerhouse’ India is also a ‘witness’ to this. The Bangladesh team has not been able to beat India in Tests so far. Out of the 13 Test matches played between the two teams, India has won 11 while 2 have been draws. Out of these 11, Team India has won 5 matches by an innings margin.

Similarly, in a test match of 2004, Bangladesh team had to face embarrassment when the top score in the second innings was made by the player batting at number 11 and the team collapsed at a low score of 124 runs. This test is remembered for the centuries of current coach of Team India Gautam Gambhir and former coach Rahul Dravid and deadly bowling (5/32) of Irfan Pathan. In this test match held in Chittagong in December 2004, Bangladesh team could not cross India’s score of 540 runs even in both the innings and lost by an innings margin. Indian team did a clean sweep against the host team in both the tests and Pathan (Irfan Pathan) was the Player of the Series by taking 18 wickets.

Gambhir and Dravid scored centuries for India

In this second test of the 2004 series, Team India captain Sourav Ganguly won the toss and decided to bat first. With the help of Gambhir’s 139 (196 balls, 19 fours) and Dravid’s 160 (304 balls, 24 fours) runs, the team scored 540 runs in the first innings. In reply, Bangladesh lost 4 wickets at 124 runs at one point, but in difficult moments, with the help of Mohammad Ashraful’s unbeaten century (158 runs, 24 fours and three sixes), the host team was able to score 333 runs. Despite this, it had to face follow-on. For India, Anil Kumble took four wickets and Irfan Pathan and Zaheer Khan took two wickets each.

11th ranked Zuber was the top scorer in Bangladesh’s second innings

While playing follow-on, Bangladesh’s second innings was even worse. The team kept losing wickets at regular intervals to Irfan Pathan’s swing bowling and was all out for just 124 runs in 26.4 overs. At one point, the team lost 9 wickets for 84 runs and even scoring 100 runs seemed difficult. If Bangladesh reached 124 runs, all the credit goes to the 31-run innings of number 11 batsman Talha Zuber. Pathan took the wickets of 5 top batsmen – Nafees Iqbal, Javed Omar, captain Habibul Bashar, Aftab Ahmed and Mohammad Rafiq. The Indian team won the match by an innings and 83 runs. Earlier, in the first Test of this series in Dhaka, Irfan had taken 11 wickets (5 in the first innings and 6 in the second innings) and was the Man of the Match in India’s innings victory.

The number 11 batsman of Pakistan and Sri Lanka have also made this record
In Asian countries, apart from Talha Zubair, Pakistan’s Asif and Sri Lanka’s Mudalige Amerasinghe have also made the highest score of an innings as the 11th batsman. In February 1975, in the first innings of Lahore Test against West Indies, Pakistan team was out on a score of 199 in which 11th batsman Asif Masood scored the highest unbeaten 30 runs. The match ended in a draw. Similarly, in March 1984, in Sri Lanka-New Zealand’s Kandy Test, the host team was out after scoring 215 runs in the first innings in which the highest score was of 11th batsman Amerasinghe (34 runs). The Kiwi team won the match by an innings margin.

India’s biggest win against Bangladesh
Talking about the India-Bangladesh Test record, Team India got its biggest victory in May 2007 in Mirpur when it won by an innings and 239 runs. In this match, India’s top 4 batsmen – Dinesh Karthik, Wasim Jaffer, captain Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar scored centuries. In terms of runs, India’s biggest win over Bangladesh is of 208 runs (February 2017, Hyderabad). In this match, Virat Kohli scored a double century (204 runs).
