The first consignment has been received by the Indian Army and it is in the hands of Indian soldiers on the Pakistan and China front. The Indian Army was waiting for assault rifles for a long time. Now the Indian Army has received the first consignment of US-made Sig Sauer and Russian AK-203. With this, the INSAS (Indian National Small Arms System) rifle, which has been the strength of the Indian Army for more than three decades, is now going to be a part of history. Assault rifles, American Sig Sauer and Russian AK-203 are replacing them.

72400 Sig Sauer rifles already with the soldiers

72400 Sig Sauer rifles procured from America have already been handed over to the soldiers. After this, an order for 73000 more Sig Sauer rifles has also been placed. In December 2023, the Defense Purchase Council of the Ministry of Defense approved the purchase of additional Sig Sauer rifles. Earlier in 2019, an order for 72400 SIG 716 was placed. American company Sig Sauer issued a statement informing that a contract has been signed with the Ministry of Defense of the Government of India for the purchase of 73000 Sig Sauer rifles.

India is making emergency purchases under the fast track procedure and combining both consignments, the Defense Ministry has procured a total of 145,400 Sig Sauer rifles for the Indian Army. About 1.5 lakh Sig Sauer rifles have been procured on an emergency basis under the fast track procedure. If we talk about the specialty of this rifle, then it is very light in weight and its firepower is of 7.62 caliber. The barrel of this rifle is 16 inches and its range is 400 meters and it hits the target accurately. It has 6 different telescopic positions. The first consignment of Sig Sauer is already present with the soldiers deployed on LAC and LOC.

Russian AK-203 also reached the army…

Now the Russian AK-203 made in India has also started being given to the army. India and Russia joint venture Indo Russian Rifle Private Limited Company is manufacturing it in Amethi in India and has handed over 35000 AK-203 rifles to the Defense Ministry. While issuing this information in a statement, Rostec State Corporation said that the first phase has been completed. If we talk about these 35 thousand AK-203 being in the hands of Indian soldiers, then according to army sources, so far 10 thousand AK-203 have been given to different units of the army.

The remaining rifles have been delivered to the army and the final inspection is underway before they are given to the soldiers and as soon as this is completed, the process of giving them to the army personnel will be started. The special thing is that till now the Indian Army has been using the 5.62 mm caliber INSAS rifle. Increasing its firepower, it is being replaced with 7.62 X 39mm caliber AK-203. To promote self-reliance in the defense sector along with military strength, Russia and India are jointly producing AK-203 in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh with the use of the AK series’ most modern assault rifle AK-203.

After a long wait, the deal for AK-203 rifles was signed between India and Russia in 2021, under this defense deal worth about Rs 5100 crore, about 6 lakh rifles will be made in the Amethi factory. If we talk about its specialty, AK-203 assault rifles, with an effective range of 300 meters, are light weight, strong and easy to use modern assault rifles with new technology.

INSAS rifle is with us since 30 years…

The Indian Army soldiers deployed on LAC and LOC are still armed with INSAS rifles which have been serving the Indian Army for nearly 30 years. Now they have started to change. Even in the Kargil war, the Indian Army soldiers had driven Pakistan out of Indian soil with the help of these INSAS rifles, but now to strengthen the hands of the army soldiers, Sig Sauer rifles have been handed over to them from America.

Pakistan, along with its all-weather friend China, is busy upgrading its army as well as its terrorist organization. Meanwhile, China is also settling villages in Tibet. Amidst these news, the preparations that India has now will definitely prove to be scary for both China and Pakistan.
