London. Harry Brook will captain England for the first time in the ODI series against Australia after Jos Buttler was ruled out of the team due to a calf injury. Buttler has not played any competitive match since England’s defeat in the T20 World Cup semi-final against India in Guyana at the end of June this year. Due to this injury, he was also not selected in the team for the three-match T20 International series against Australia.
He was included in the ODI team against Australia but has been dropped after failing to recover from injury. Twenty-five-year-old Brook has played only 15 ODIs for England but the team management sees him as a future captain. He was declared the vice-captain when the ODI team was announced under the leadership of Butler.
The five-match ODI series between England and Australia will begin at Trent Bridge on Thursday. Brook’s appointment as captain also means that England have a new captain in every international format in the current season. Ollie Pope captained the Test team in the three-match series against Sri Lanka in place of the injured Ben Stokes, while Phil Salt led the team in the T20 series in Butler’s absence.
