Indian-origin Anita Anand has withdrawn her name from the race for the post of Prime Minister of Canada. He has also refused to contest in the elections to be held this year. Anita has posted a letter on X giving this information.
Anita wrote in her letter that-
Today I am announcing that I will not run to become the next leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and will not seek re-election as the Member of Parliament for Oakville.
Earlier, many media reports were claiming that Anita could become the next Prime Minister after the resignation of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. For now, Justin Trudeau will remain the Prime Minister until a new leader is elected.
Anita Anand is working as Transport Minister in the Trudeau government.
Who is Anita Anand?
- Anita’s father was from Tamil Nadu while her mother was from Punjab. However, Anita was born and raised in Nova Scotia, a rural area in Canada.
- He did his Graduation in Arts in Political Science from Queen’s University, Graduation in Arts in Jurisprudence from Oxford University, Graduation in Law from Dalhousie University and Masters in Law from the University of Toronto.
- 57 year old Anita is a lawyer by profession. He won his first parliamentary election in 2019 from the Oakville seat in Canada. In the same year he was made the Cabinet Minister of Public Services and Procurement.
- Anita is the second woman to hold the Defense Ministry of Canada. Earlier in 1990, Kim Campbell had taken this responsibility.
- Anita has also been the Associate Dean of the University of Toronto. She married John Knowlton in 1995, who is a Canadian lawyer and business executive. He has 4 children.
- Anita Anand has been a vocal supporter of gender equality. She supports LGBTQIA+ rights. He also led initiatives to fight sexual misconduct and bring about cultural change in the Canadian Defense Forces.
- Kim Campbell of the Progressive Conservative Party became the first female Prime Minister of Canada in 1993, after which no woman has reached the post of Prime Minister in Canada.
Anita Anand was born in a rural area of Canada. She has been the Associate Dean of the University of Toronto.
Trudeau’s party does not have majority
The Liberal Party has 153 MPs in the House of Commons, the Parliament of Canada. There are 338 seats in the House of Commons. The majority figure in this is 170. Last year, the New Democratic Party (NDP), an ally of the Trudeau government, had withdrawn the support of 25 of its MPs. The NDP is the party of pro-Khalistan Canadian Sikh MP Jagmeet Singh.
Due to the break of the alliance, the Trudeau government was reduced to minority. However, in the majority test held on October 1, Trudeau’s Liberal Party got the support of another party. Because of this, Trudeau passed the floor test.
New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh has decided to again bring a no-confidence motion against PM Trudeau. Although the Canadian Parliament has been adjourned till March 24, the Liberal Party has more than 60 days to gather majority and elect a new leader.
