New MNP Rules to Prevent SIM Swap Fraud !
New MNP Rules ( 2024)

The rules for mobile number portability (MNP) in India are set to undergo significant changes. If your SIM card is stolen or damaged, you will now need to wait seven days before obtaining a new SIM card with the same number. Previously, it was possible to immediately acquire a replacement SIM with the same number.

Key Changes

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has introduced a seven-day waiting period for issuing a new SIM card in cases of theft or damage. This adjustment is aimed at enhancing security and curbing SIM swap fraud.

Reason for the Change

This decision by TRAI is intended to combat fraudulent activities that have emerged from SIM swapping. Instances were reported where stolen SIM cards were used to activate the same number on a different SIM, facilitating fraudulent actions. The new rule introduces a mandatory waiting period to prevent such occurrences.

Understanding SIM Swapping

SIM swapping refers to the practice of activating the same phone number on a different SIM card. This has been a growing concern, leading to various frauds. The new rule aims to mitigate these risks by ensuring a controlled issuance of replacement SIM cards.

By implementing these changes, TRAI hopes to enhance the overall security framework and reduce the likelihood of fraud related to SIM swaps.
