Cabinet Approves Rs 2,870 Crore Funding for Expansion of Varanasi Airport

The Indian Cabinet has given the green light to a significant project aimed at enhancing Varanasi’s Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport(Varanasi Airport). The expansion plan, estimated at Rs 2,870 crore, includes the following key components:

  1. Runway Extension: The existing runway will be extended to accommodate increased air traffic. This move is crucial as the airport has been operating at near-full capacity, serving both tourists and pilgrims.
  2. New Terminal Building: A state-of-the-art terminal building will be constructed. This facility will not only enhance passenger experience but also serve as a showcase for Indian culture and heritage.
  3. Green Initiatives: The project aims to make the airport environmentally friendly by minimizing energy consumption. It will be developed using internal resources from the Airport Authority of India.

The expansion of Varanasi Airport is a strategic step to meet growing demand and promote tourism in the region. With this investment, the airport’s capacity is expected to increase from 3.9 million passengers annually to 9.9 million.
