Iyer was one of the players who played an important role in India’s victory in the 50 -over World Cup in 2023. The middle -order batsman scored 530 runs and became the seventh highest run -scorer in the global event.
He gave proof of his ability in this format by scoring 59 off 36 balls in the first ODI against England in Nagpur. In domestic cricket too, 30 -year -old Iyer is in excellent form this season and he scored two centuries for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Ponting said in the ‘ICC Review’, “I am a little surprised that he has been out of the Indian team for the last few years. He played a spectacular World Cup in India (2023) in which he performed brilliantly in the middle order. I then thought that he had almost made the place almost confirmed. ”
He said, “However, he got some hurt again. He was out of the team due to a back injury. But this year his domestic season has been excellent. Ponting feels that Iyer will perform well in the Champions Trophy starting on February 19. He said, “We know how well he plays spin bowling on a slow wicket. Punjab Kings coach Ponting bought Iyer for Rs 26.75 crore for the upcoming IPL session.
