We talk about the work of actors and directors in films. However, we hardly remember one person who works hardest behind the scenes. We are talking about cinematographer. This is where the work of converting the story into a moving film is done.
It is not easy to shoot an entire film with heavy camera handling, scene visualization and understanding the director’s vision. In a way, he can be called the artist behind the camera. Cinematographer is also called DOP (Director of Photography).
Talk about cinematography in the new episode of Reel to Real. For this we talked to famous cinematographers Aseem Bajaj and Kabir Lal. Both of them also revealed some interesting stories related to film making.
He told that many film starts show a lot of interest in cinematography. They pay special attention to camera angle, focus and lighting. Akshay Kumar is an actor who does not like to shoot at night. He films all his sequences in daylight.
Veteran actor Dharmendra pays special attention to lighting. If the lighting on the set is a little off, they start shouting at the cinematographer.
Sometimes night sequences have to be filmed during the day. Many actors do not shoot at night. In such a situation, even the night sequences have to be filmed during the day. Here the role of cinematographer increases. Here the scene is shot in such a way that no clouds or sky are visible. This reduces the light and dark type starts appearing on the screen. However, the work does not end even after the shoot. Night filter is also applied to the scene during post production. Only then the scene is complete.
Shooting a film is not a big deal, the cinematographer should have knowledge of literature. According to Aseem Bajaj, a cinematographer should have more knowledge of art than technical knowledge. Anyone can handle a camera. Shooting movies, taking photos or making videos is also not a big deal. Cinematographer should read literature books. Only if he has knowledge of art and literature, he will be able to understand the vision of the director.
What is the difference between cinematographer and camera operator? The person who handles heavy cameras during shooting is called camera operator. He moves the camera according to the scene. His job is simply to capture the live event. The cinematographer sits on the side and observes the focus, lighting, frame and movement of the actors. He teaches handling to the camera operator.
A cinematographer’s team consists of 7 to 8 people. It consists of chief cameraman, focus puller and assistant cameraman. However, this number may increase depending on the scale of the film.
Now who is this focus puller? Another cameraman stands with the DOP, he is called the focus puller. He remains focused on the object all the time. How far the object is, how much it is moving, it calculates every inch. If the focus puller’s attention wanders even a little here and there, the scene can be spoiled.
Lighting plays the biggest role in cinematography, Dharmendra leaves the set when the lighting is bad. Lighting plays a big role in cinematography. Lighting is done before the start of the film, so that the scene appears clearly on the curtain or screen. Veteran actor Dharmendra focuses a lot on lighting. If his face appears even a little dark on the screen, he starts shouting at the cinematographer. They stop shooting, even leave the set.
Dharmendra has worked in more than 300 films in his entire career.
There was a demand for Ajay Devgan in the film Runway-34. There was a court room scene in the film. He said that he does not want any kind of disturbance during the shoot. For this reason, Aseem Bajaj had started the lighting of that room three days ago. A total of 13 cameras were used to film that particular sequence. It took three days to light the 13 cameras.
Obviously, lighting on the day of the shoot makes the actors irritated. Besides, their time is also wasted. For this reason, the DOP or cinematographer does pre-lighting on the set beforehand.
When there was no monitor, the scene had to be reshot if a mistake was made. Earlier there was no monitor. Everything depended on the cinematographer. Once what was shot, it could not be checked. Whether there was any mistake in the scene or not could be known only on the editing table. Therefore, during the shooting, if the cinematographer felt that the shot was not perfect, he used to re-shoot the scene.
Amitabh Bachchan never looks at the monitor, he trusts the work of the cinematographer Asim Bajaj worked as a cinematographer with Amitabh Bachchan and international star Ben Kingsley in the film Teen Patti. Narrating the story of the shooting, he said, ‘There is not even a single percent of pride or ego in Bachchan Saheb and Sir Ben Kingsley. He did not even look at the monitor after the shot was completed. He had faith in the work of the cinematographer.
Cinematographers even risk their lives while shooting Cinematographer Kabir Lal said, ‘The shooting of Sunny Deol’s film Hero was going on in a snowy area of Europe. I was the DOP of that film. Had to go to a height and take some shots. The ground temperature at that time was -10 degrees Celsius.
After reaching the altitude the temperature became -30 degrees Celsius. I was sitting in the helicopter and taking shots with the camera in my hands. Gradually my hands and legs started freezing. I wasn’t even wearing winter clothes. It felt as if my life would be lost. This was the most dangerous shoot for me.
Film Taal was shot in real rain, cinematographer got irritated at Subhash Ghai Kabir Lal has worked as a cinematographer in the films of veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai. While sharing the story of shooting of Subhash Ghai’s superhit film Taal, he said, ‘Subhash ji said that we will shoot this film in real rain and storm.
We went to Khandala, the hilly area adjacent to Mumbai. Used to sit there the whole day and wait for the rain. Then we shot all the shots when it rained. There were many problems in the shooting. I thought for a moment why I did not stop Subhash Ghai ji from doing this. I was feeling very irritated also. However, after the release of the film, I understood his point. The film became a superhit. The cinematography of this film was highly praised.

Kabir Lal said, ‘There is a scene in Kaho Na Pyaar, where Hrithik Roshan and Ameesha Patel get stuck on an island. It took 30 days to film that one shot. For this the film team had gone to Bangkok.
Five of us, including the film’s director Rakesh Roshan and star cast Hrithik-Ameesha, used to go to an island in a boat every day and then shoot there. One day when we were going for a shoot, terrible waves started rising. There was a possibility of a cyclone. Be thankful that the person driving the boat was smart. He immediately turned the engine to the other side, otherwise we all could have lost our lives.
