Who settled in Canada first?
According to a BBC report, in 1897, Queen Victoria had invited a contingent of British Indian soldiers to come to London to participate in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. It is said that during this time a group of cavalry soldiers was with the Queen in British Columbia, Canada. Risaledar Major Kesar Singh was also included among these soldiers. He decided to settle in Canada with some soldiers and stayed in British Columbia. However, some soldiers did not like the difficult conditions here, especially the extreme cold, and they returned to India. At the same time some Indians started coming and settling in Canada. Within a few years, 5000 Indians reached British Columbia, 90 percent of whom were Sikhs.

This condition was imposed to stop Indians
According to a report, the officials there were not liking the increasing population of Indians in Canada. Indian people started taking jobs in Canada and they also started facing opposition. By 1907, racial discrimination against Indians had started. Only a few years later, a law was made in Canada to ban the arrival of immigrants from India. According to the rules, it was made mandatory for Indians to have an amount of $200 to enter Canada.

Sikhs were forcibly sent to India
However, for Europeans this amount was only 25 dollars. During this period, even in difficult circumstances, the Sikhs were not ready to leave Canada. Sikhs established a strong community culture and also built Gurudwaras there. It is said that Sikhs were also forcibly sent to India from Canada. Komagata Maru, a ship filled with Sikhs, Hindus and Muslims, arrived at Budge Budge Ghat in Kolkata in 1914. 19 people aboard this ship died. This ship full of Indians was not allowed to enter Canada.

More than 16 lakh Indians have settled
More than 16 lakh people of Indian origin live in Canada, while the number of Indian immigrants is 7 lakh. Most of the Indians in the whole world live in Canada. This is four percent of the total population of Canada. The Indian population mostly lives in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa and Winnipeg in Canada. Not only this, Sikhism is the fourth largest religious group in Canada, with approximately eight lakh followers. By 2021, Sikhs constituted 2.1 percent of Canada’s population. Indians, especially Sikhs, have become very influential in the politics there. Currently, there are 19 MPs of Indian origin in the Parliament of Canada, while there are three cabinet ministers in Justin Trudeau’s government.
