Pune. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Saturday claimed that after 1857, the British systematically tried to reduce the faith of the countrymen in their traditions and ancestors. Bhagwat said that there is superstition, but faith is never blind. He said that some practices and customs that are being followed are faith. He said that some practices and customs may be wrong and they need to be changed.
“The British made systematic efforts after 1857 (when the British monarchy began to formally rule India) to wipe out faith from our minds… the faith we had in our own traditions and ancestors was destroyed,” the RSS chief said.
Speaking at the launch of GB Deglurkar’s book, Bhagwat said that idol worship is prevalent in India which goes beyond the form and connects with the formless. He said that it is not possible for everyone to reach the formless, so one has to move forward step by step. He stressed, “That is why a form is created in the form of idols.”
The RSS chief said there is a science behind the idols. He said the idols in India have emotions on their faces which are not seen anywhere else in the world. He said, “The idols of demons are shown holding anything tightly in their fists. Demons have a tendency to keep everything in their hands. We will protect the things that are in our fists (under our control). That is why they are demons.”
He said that but the idols of the God will also be seen holding the bow like a lotus. He said that there should be a vision to go from the saakar to niraakar and those who have faith will have that vision.
