Afghan refugees crisis in Pakistan
After the Taliban came to power, millions of Afghan citizens moved to neighboring countries, the most people reached Pakistan and Iran. There were already about 3 million Afghan refugees in Pakistan, most of whom came in the 1980s during the Soviet invasion.
After the return of the Taliban, more than 6 lakh new refugees reached Pakistan. By the end of 2023, the Government of Pakistan started a campaign to send illegal Afghan refugees back.
Pakistan has ordered more than 1.5 million illegal Afghans to leave the country. The Taliban government has strongly objected to this action of Pakistan. But Pakistan has continued this action citing its national interests.
