This is the second meeting of US officials with Indian leaders this month.
Senior officials of the US Embassy in India met Kashmiri leaders on August 26. Embassy officials reached Srinagar to meet National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah at his residence. This meeting took place at Omar Abdullah’s house Gupkar.
The officials who met the Kashmiri leaders included Minister-Counselor for Political Affairs at the US Embassy Graham Meyer, First Secretary Gerry Applegarth and Political Counselor Abhiram Ghadyalpatil.
Graham Meyer has already visited Kashmir in 2023. During this, he met Jammu and Kashmir Governor Manoj Sinha. National Conference MP from Srinagar Ruhullah Mehdi was also present during the meeting.
The US Consul General met AIMIM chief Owaisi
On August 12 this month, Consul General Jennifer Larsen of the US Consulate in Hyderabad met AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi. Consul General Jennifer Larsen posted the picture of the meeting on X.
During the meeting, the two discussed various issues. Jennifer also thanked Owaisi for the meeting.
Assembly elections are to be held in Kashmir next month
This meeting of the US officials has taken place at a time when elections are to be held in Kashmir next month. The Election Commission had announced the holding of elections in Kashmir in a press conference on 16 August. Voting is to be held in three phases in the state on 18 September, 25 September and 1 October. There are a total of 90 assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir.
Elections are going to be held in the valley for the first time after the removal of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir in 2019. With the removal of Article 370, Kashmir was divided into two parts, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, and made a union territory.
