Voting for the presidential elections continues in America. It is believed that there will be a tough contest between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump in this election. Pre-election polls suggest that this will be one of the closest presidential elections in history. Voting is going on there to choose the next President and now everyone around the world is waiting to know who will become the next boss of America between Kamala Harris or Donald Trump.
Although it may take some time for the results of the US presidential election to be known, once the voting is over, exit poll projections can give a rough idea of victory or defeat. The ban on exit poll results will be lifted at 5 pm on election day. After this, media organizations will be allowed to show the results of different states. However, during this period they will not be allowed to make any predictions as long as the voting is going on.
Exit poll results will be shown only in those states where the victory margin is high. The results of exit polls of important states will not be used to predict who has won, Kamala Harris or Donald Trump. Instead, election analysts will use exit polls, actual vote counting and other data to predict the winner.
When will we know who won the presidential election?
If Donald Trump or Kamala Harris gets a significant lead over the other, the results can become clear within a few hours. However, if the victory margin is small, it may take several days or even weeks for the final results to be announced.
In 2000, when there was a presidential contest between Al Gore and George W. Bush, voting was completed on November 7 but the election results came on December 12. Here the matter was stuck over the results of Florida, where votes were recounted due to Bush’s small margin of victory. The case eventually reached the Supreme Court, where the judges ordered the recount ended, forcing Al Gore to concede defeat.
Why hold elections now and declare the winner in January?
Although the results of the presidential election will be declared in advance, the official announcement of the winner will not be made until January. First, states must certify the results for the presidential election, which takes place in November or December. Next, a joint session of Congress counts the electoral votes and, as per the 12th Amendment, the election winner will be declared on January 6, 2025. In 2021, it was during this certification process that Donald Trump’s supporters attacked the Capitol.
