Washington: America’s new Foreign Minister Marco has come into action since assuming the post of Rubio. On Wednesday, he warned China and reiterated the US commitment with the Philippines. He spoke over the phone with the Philippine External Affairs Minister Enrikhe Manalo, which discussed dangerous and instability activities in the South China Sea. The US State Department said in a statement, “Foreign Minister Rubio said that this attitude of China weakens regional peace and stability and is not in line with international law.” In the last two years, there have been many disputes between the Philippines and China about the sea. The two have repeatedly conflicted over the areas of the South China Sea which fall into the special economic field of the Philippines.

Rubio held a meeting with the Foreign Ministers of the Philippines with the Foreign Ministers of the quad countries before the phone call. This was the first meeting after Trump’s second term. The four countries together committed to reinforce mutual cooperation. Quad member countries and the Philippines have expressed concern over China’s growing strength. Analysts say that the quad’s meeting is a big sign to China as soon as Trump takes the oath. Through this meeting, Trump is indicating that competing with China will be the priority of his administration.

‘America cannot speak on South China Sea’
In a conversation with Manalo, Rubio reiterated ‘unbreakable’ commitments with the Philippines, which are under the mutual defense treaty of the two countries. The US Secretary of State discussed ways to advance security cooperation, strengthen economic relations and deepen regional cooperation. According to the report by the news agency Reuters, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that its activities in the South China Sea are ‘valid, legitimate and beyond criticism’. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said that the US is not a party to the South China Sea dispute and has no right to intervene in maritime issues between China and the Philippines.

Trump warns China
US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 10 percent duty on imports from 1 February. Apart from this, he has also threatened to put tariffs on the European Union. Speaking at the White House a day after the oath, Trump said that it is necessary to take such steps to remove the business imbalance and deal with Phantanail smuggling. Trump’s tariff tariffs are not only China but also Mexico and Canada. Trump warned of 25 percent tariff on both countries.
