Nigeria Stampede: Christmas is about to come. In such a situation, the excitement of the festival can be clearly seen in countries around the world. In fact, in Nigeria, a country suffering from hunger, food is being organized for the people by the Church in different cities before Christmas. Besides, gifts are also being distributed to children. During this period, 67 people died in the country since last Thursday during the stampede. It was told that people were desperate to get food and drinks. It was due to this mistake that the stampede occurred.
In the latest case, 32 people lost their lives in a stampede during two Christmas charity programs in Abuja, Nigeria. At least four children are also among those who died. Local police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga said the dead included 22 people from Okija town in south-eastern Anambra state, where a man had arranged for food for people through a church on Saturday. On the same lines, ten other people died during a charity program organized by the church in the capital Abuja. Police said they are investigating both incidents.
How did the incident happen?
Nigeria is one of the most populous countries in Africa. Here, the trend of organizing charity programs before Christmas by local organizations, churches and some well-meaning people has increased rapidly amidst the hunger and economic crisis in the country. Witnesses to the Abuja stampede said a crowd gathered at a church gate at around 4 a.m. A day before, it had been announced by the church that food would be arranged for the people the next day. People started trying to enter the church by breaking the gate early in the morning.
Even the governor is surprised
Loveth Inyang, who rescued a child from the mob, told news agency AP that some of them waited all night to get food. Seeing the seriousness of the matter, the Governor himself reached the spot. The state governor announced that such events will not be organized in future without implementing security measures.
