It brought hurricane-force winds, heavy rain and snowfall to parts of Washington state, Oregon and California.
The United States National Weather Service (NWS) reported wind speeds of 158 km per hour on the Oregon coast and 124 km per hour at Mount Rainier in Washington state. At least two people died in the storm in Washington state and about 600,000 homes lost power. As of Friday evening, more than 260,000 people remained without power in Washington state and Oregon and more than 92,000 in California.
In Oregon, the atmospheric river has brought heavy rainfall. Some areas may receive 20 to 30 cm rainfall. NW has issued a flood warning for Oregon until Friday evening. California felt the wrath of the atmospheric river (a narrow corridor of moisture in the Earth’s atmosphere), with some areas receiving 15 to 30 centimeters of rainfall by Thursday. At the same time, about 12 small landslides were reported in the state in just 24 hours. Transport was severely disrupted across the region. The storm also caused heavy snowfall in the higher areas. A snowstorm warning was issued for much of Washington state’s Cascade Range. Northern Sierra Nevada and Oregon Cascades are also expected to receive 30 to 61 centimeters of snowfall. Climate scientists have warned that this storm has exposed California’s rapidly increasing weather patterns. The National Weather Service has urged residents of affected areas to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
