Sports Desk, Indore (IND First test win in ENG). 24th August is a very important day in the history of Indian Test cricket. On this day in 1971, the Indian team defeated England for the first time on its soil.

India had trapped the English team, who boasted of fast bowling, in their own home, using spin and had even won the series. The first two matches of the three-Test series were drawn, while India won the third by four wickets.

  • This test match was played between 19 to 24 August 1971.
  • Then there used to be a rest day between the tests. The 24th was the rest day.
  • England won the toss and decided to bat at Lord’s.
  • The first innings ended at 355 runs. Solkar took 3 wickets.
  • Under the captaincy of Ajit Wadekar, Team India could score 284 runs.
  • Host England gained a lead of 71 runs in the first innings.
  • Spin worked its magic in the second innings. ENG collapsed at 101.
  • India needed 173 runs for their first win in England.
  • The team achieved the target on 24 August by losing 6 wickets.

1. In the second innings, leg spinner Bhagwat Chandrasekhar took 6 wickets for 38 runs. He had also taken 2 wickets in the first innings.

2. Middle order Batsman Dilip Sardesai batted brilliantly in both the innings (54 runs and 40 runs).
