Insect dishes are being served as samples with seafood in restaurants in Singapore.

In Singapore, 16 types of insects have been allowed to be included in the food. These include crickets, grasshoppers, grubs, a species of bee and insects that grow in grains. In fact, insects have already been a part of street food in many South-East Asian countries. But in Singapore, eating insects was not allowed due to hygiene and health reasons.

However, now the food policy has been changed here. Singapore’s Food Agency has ordered that the insects passed for eating will be raised under the supervision of experts. They will not be brought from the wild environment. They cannot be given spoiled food during care.

Insect dishes being given as samples
According to news agency Reuters, a seafood restaurant in Singapore has started serving these insects. In the restaurant, shrimps are being served with fish curry and insects with tofu. Apart from this, toppings of insects have also been added to fried rice. 30 such dishes have been included in the restaurant’s menu, in which these insects will be served.

After getting permission from the Food Authority, these will be given to the general public. Currently, these are being served to customers as samples. Singapore’s food security expert Paul Teng said that most insects have a very high amount of protein. However, it will be a big challenge to include them in people’s everyday diet.

According to news agency Reuters, Singapore imports 90% of its food from other countries. In 2019, the Singapore government announced that by 2030, 30% of nutrients would be produced in the country itself.
