How Saif became the Nawab of Bhopal Professor Kidwai tells that Nawab Hamidullah had 3 daughters. The eldest was Abida, the second was Sajida and the third was Rabia. Abida Sultan left India in 1950 and took Pakistani citizenship. She was angry with the actions of her father Hamidullah. When her father Nawab Hamidullah Khan died in 1960, she was present in Bhopal.

Abida Sultan felt that if she wanted to give up her Pakistani citizenship and settle in Bhopal, she would be made the Nawab of the royal family. Field Marshal Ayub Khan, the then President of Pakistan, also advised him to settle in Bhopal but he rejected the post of Bhopal Nawab.

The second daughter Sajida was married to Nawab Iftikar Ali Khan of Pataudi, Haryana. Iftikar’s son was Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. Mansoor’s son is Saif Ali Khan. After the death of Nawab Hamidullah, Sajida Sultan’s husband Iftikhar Ali Khan became the Nawab of Pataudi Bhopal.

Center considered Nawab’s property as enemy property On February 25, 2015, the Central Government had ordered the Revenue Department to confiscate the property of the Pataudi family under the Enemy Property Act. Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi’s son Saif Ali Khan Pataudi has challenged this order in the High Court.

It has been said in the petition that Abida Sultan, the elder daughter of Nawab Hamidullah of Bhopal state, had gone to Pakistan. The then President had issued a notification in 1960 declaring Sajida Sultan, the second daughter of the Bhopal Nawab, the heir of the property. Sajida’s son and cricketer Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi succeeded him.

At the same time, the central government says that the legal heir of Nawab Hamidullah Khan is Abida Sultan, who had gone to Pakistan. Therefore, he has the right to confiscate their property under the Enemy Property Act.

In 2019, the court had accepted Saif's grandmother Sajida Sultan as the legal heir of the Bhopal property.

Sharmila’s argument – Abida went to Pakistan, she has no right on the property.

Sharmila Tagore argued in the court that Abida Sultan had gone to Pakistan after the partition of 1947 and the Bhopal Nawab had died in India, hence she had no claim on Indian property on the basis of Shariat. After this, in the year 2019, the court ruled that Saif’s grandmother Sajida Sultan is the legal heir of the Bhopal property. Saif’s elder sister, Saba Ali, is the principal trustee of the Auqaf-e-Shahi Trust, which resolves these disputes. For this, she comes to Bhopal from time to time and participates in the meetings of the Trust.
