PM Modi has arrived to address the Parliament of Guyana for the first time.
Prime Minister Modi is on a 2-day visit to Guyana. On Thursday, the last day of the tour, he arrived to address the Parliament of Guyana. During his address, PM Modi said that India has a deep relationship of soil, sweat and hard work with Guyana.
The PM said that the history of both the countries is similar. In the last 200 to 250 years, India and Guyana have simultaneously witnessed slavery and the struggle for independence. About 180 years ago, an Indian came to the soil of Guyana, and since then, through thick and thin, the relationship between India and Guyana has always been full of intimacy.
During this he said that democracy is included in our DNA. He said that India is fulfilling its duty as Vishwabandhu. The PM said that he had the opportunity to come to Guyana 24 years ago as a curiosity.
During this, Modi also mentioned Guyana’s chutney. He said he could not forget the Guyanese chutney.

Dominica and Guyana gave highest honor to PM Modi
PM Modi has been honored with ‘The Dominica Award of Honor’ by the Caribbean country Dominica in Guyana. Dominica President Sylvanie Burton honored PM Modi with her country’s highest honour. PM Modi has been given this award for delivering the vaccine to Dominica during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Guyana also honored Modi with its highest national honor ‘Order of Excellence’ and Barbados honored him with the Honorary Order of Freedom of Barbados. He dedicated the award to all Indians. Apart from this, during his two-day visit to Guyana, PM Modi also participated in the second India-CARICOM Summit with representatives of Caribbean countries.
Dominica President Sylvanie Burton and Guyana President Mohammed Irfan honored PM Modi.
On the sidelines of the summit, the Prime Minister held bilateral discussions with representatives of Caribbean countries. Apart from Guyana President Mohammad Irfan, PM Modi held formal talks with other leaders including Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and Suriname President Chan Santokhi.
After the talks, PM Modi and President Irfan also addressed the people. The President of Guyana said-
It is the biggest honor for us to have PM Modi here. He is a champion among leaders. Modi has shown excellent leadership. Has shown light to the developing world. That method of development has been adopted, which many people are adopting in their country.
Modi thanked President Irfan for welcoming him to Guyana. He said that President Irfan has a special relationship with India. He is the brand ambassador of the Indian community.
The PM said that he has come to visit Guyana after almost 24 years. Earlier, he had come to Guyana for a personal visit as a common man. This is the visit of an Indian PM to Guyana after 56 years.
Important points of PM Modi in his address:-
- India has made a significant contribution to the skill development of the people of Guyana. We will take this cooperation forward.
- India will continue to contribute to the capacity development of Guyana’s troops through scholarships and training.
- Last year, we contributed to food security by providing millets. Now we will also help in the cultivation of other crops.
- MoU has been signed to increase cooperation between agricultural institutions of the two countries.
- India will open Jan Aushadhi Center in Guyana.
After the address, PM Modi and President Irfan planted saplings.
PM Modi reached Guyana’s President Irfan along with his wife and children to plant saplings.
Modi reached Guyana after attending G20 summit Earlier, PM Modi had reached Guyana on Wednesday morning after the G20 summit meeting in Brazil. In the capital Georgetown, Guyana’s President Mohammed Irfan and Prime Minister Antony Phillips broke protocol and reached the airport to welcome him. Along with him, about a dozen cabinet ministers also welcomed PM Modi. He was also given the Guard of Honor at the airport itself.
PM Modi will be honored with the highest national award ‘The Order of Excellence’ in Guyana. Apart from this, Barbados will also honor him with the ‘Honorary Award of Freedom of Barbados’.

On reaching the hotel in Georgetown, people of Indian origin warmly welcomed PM Modi.
PM Modi will be on a state visit to Guyana on November 20 and 21. He is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Guyana in 56 years. Before him, Indira Gandhi had visited Guyana in 1968. PM Modi will address a special meeting of the Parliament of Guyana. He will also attend the CARICOM-India Summit.
After the discovery of oil and gas mines in Guyana in 2020, its GDP is growing at the rate of about 40% annually. Due to this it has become a center of trade and investment. In such a situation, during the visit to Guyana, a deal related to energy and defense resources can be made between PM Modi and Guyana President Mohammad Irfan Ali.
40% of Guyana’s population is of Indian origin. The ancestors of President Mohammad Irfan Ali himself were brought to the Caribbean country on a British ship.
In January last year, Guyana’s President Mohammad Irfan Ali had come to India as the chief guest for the Pravasi Bharatiya Conference. Vice President Bharat Jagdev also visited India in February 2023. Guyana Prime Minister Mark Phillips also visited India in February this year.
Natural gas and oil reserves near Guyana Guyana is a member of CARICOM, a group of 21 Caribbean countries. The group works to promote economic, political, and social integration among the countries of the Caribbean. Guyana is also known as the “Granary of the Caribbean”. At the same time, Guyana’s strategic location also increases due to its proximity to the Panama Canal.
According to the World Bank report, Guyana has approximately 11.2 billion barrels of oil reserves and 17 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. After discovery of natural gas and oil reserves in 2020, the per capita income here exceeded $18,199.
Guyana and India relations The Indian Commission was established in Georgetown, the capital of Guyana, in May 1965. Indira Gandhi visited Guyana in 1968, just two years after it gained independence. In 1988, the then Vice President Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma and in 2006, the then Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat went on a state visit to Guyana.
The total India-Guyana mutual trade in 2023-24 stood at US$ 105.97 million. During this period, India exported $99.36 million to Guyana.
By May 2024, Guyana was producing approximately 645,000 barrels of crude oil and gas. Keeping this in view, Oil and Natural Gas branch ‘ONGC Videsh’ is also continuously looking for opportunities here. Earlier this year, India approved a five-year MoU with Guyana to cooperate in hydrocarbons, including sourcing of crude oil.
Guyana’s Foreign Secretary, Robert Persaud, described Modi’s visit to Guyana as an important milestone in relations between the world’s two fastest growing economies. Energy and defense agreements are expected to be signed between the two countries during this visit. Bilateral talks can also take place on infrastructure, food security, health and technology.
