Perhaps this character captured people’s hearts because the artist who played it was special. The name of the person playing this character is Shubhrajyoti Barat.

Although he is known from Mirzapur and this year’s Tribhuvan Mishra CA topper, it does not mean that he is a new actor. He has been doing theater since 1993. There was no intention of appearing in films or web shows. Even a film like Ram Gopal Varma’s Satya was standing at his door, but he did not even consider it necessary to talk.

When he realized that he was facing shortage of money and was also not getting recognition accordingly, he turned to the industry.

Shubhrajyoti worked with Ayushmann Khurrana in the film Article 15.

Born in Kolkata, but lived in Banaras I was born in Kolkata, but have never lived there. My father used to work there. We were three brothers and sisters. My uncle took me to Banaras. There is a Bengali Tola near Pandey Haveli in Banaras. My house was there. I am saying this because we have sold that house. I studied in the famous St. John’s School there. Even the smell of cow dung in the streets of Banaras seems fragrant to me. I am not able to live, but I want to die in Banaras.

Came to Mumbai after 10th, did engineering under compulsion on the insistence of parents Meanwhile, father was transferred to Mumbai. After 10th, I came to Bombay (Mumbai) to join my father. I studied intermediate in Bombay. After this did engineering. I still look for the reason why I did engineering. Maybe I should have taken arts instead of science. I was very keen to take up arts, but the ambitions of my parents overpowered my wishes. They wondered who would give me a job after taking up arts.

Got interested in theater after 12th Between 12th and admission in engineering, I got involved with theatre. To understand about theater art, I started reading books related to it. Then joined the theater of Nadira Babbar ji (Raj Babbar’s first wife). Now my mind remained focused there only. When I used to do drama etc., I used to be praised. For the first time in my life, I was praised. I used to be very happy.

Returned after going to Ram Gopal Varma’s office I never saw myself as an actor. I used to think that theater was my world. I was happy doing theatre. Once the famous writer-director Neeraj Vora gave me the address of Ram Gopal Varma. He said that Ramu is making a film and he is looking for the main lead in it. You meet him for that role. I left home for Ram Gopal Varma ji’s office. Reached outside his office, stood for some time and returned.

‘Truth’ was not found due to lack of self-confidence I thought why would a director like Ram Gopal Varma cast me as the main lead in his film? Neither my face nor appearance. All these emotions were surging in my mind. I returned from there. You won’t believe it, but the film for which Ramu ji was looking for an actor was Satya.

Now you might be thinking that I rejected a director like Ram Gopal Varma and a film like Satya, but it is not so. I didn’t have confidence in myself that I would be able to do that role.

I have self doubt. I can’t do anything even if I want to because it has become a part of my personality. Otherwise, I know very well that doing theater does not support the family. After a certain age, when children grow up, they also have some desires which have to be fulfilled.

When there were financial problems, the wife also intervened. The wife also interrupted several times. However, he never said why he was doing theatre. She only talked about financial problems. To tell the truth, I was addicted to theatre, just like one is addicted to alcohol. Even an alcoholic knows how much harm drinking causes. I also felt that I was not earning money from doing theatre, yet I remained engaged in it.

Used to stay up all night dubbing for money Shubhrajyoti also did small roles in serials in the beginning. He said- I got a chance to work in a TV serial through someone. During this time, I also started dubbing Hindi serials in Bengali. I used to get less money for each episode, but I used to stay up all night dubbing many episodes. One could earn decent income from this.

Got a role in Emraan Hashmi’s film, but could barely act In 2013, Shubhrajyoti had a small role in the Emraan Hashmi-Vidya Balan film Ghanchakkar. There was a total of three nights of shooting. However, those three nights were difficult for Shubhrajyoti. He said- I was acting there like newcomers do. I couldn’t act.

I came home and asked myself that I have been acting for 20 years, but I am not able to get a small role as per the rules? Then the film’s director Rajkumar Gupta explained to me that you should take your time and shoot at your leisure. Later I realized that I was still not taking acting seriously.

Appeared in only 5 episodes of the first season, but became famous in the character of Rati Shankar Shukla. Even today, most people know him only by the character of Rati Shankar Shukla.

His famous dialogue in the series – ‘Join’ us, we were giving ‘offer’ to you, still remains a meme.

Talking about his character, Shubhrajyoti said- I was able to do the character of Rati Shankar Shukla better because my roots are connected to Banaras. I understand the language and body language of the people of Purvanchal.

After Mirzapur, got new identity from CA topper After Mirzapur, Shubhrajyoti also got a lot of popularity in the web series Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper released this year. Actually, this show has been written by Puneet Krishna. Puneet Krishna has also written Mirzapur. Puneet Krishna liked Shubhrajyoti’s work in Mirzapur very much. Shubhrajyoti cried remembering his father At the end of the interview, Shubhrajyoti became a little emotional. Actually we asked whether he has any ambition or struggle in his life? In response he said, ‘Father passed away in 2015. If he had lived where I am today, I would have been very happy. I too would have been very happy to see him.

I don’t have any ambition. Just let me get a good role. To be able to move two steps ahead of the stage I am at. I keep getting some money so that I can live my life with respect.
