The central government has announced to increase the minimum wage rate for workers working in the unorganized sector. This increase will be applicable from October 1, 2024. The minimum wage rate is divided into skilled, unskilled, semi-skilled and highly skilled and A, B and C geographical areas.
After the increase in the minimum wage rate, the wages of unskilled workers working in construction, sweeping, cleaning, loading and unloading in Area A will be Rs 783 per day. The wages for semi-skilled workers will be Rs 868 per day and for skilled, clerical and unarmed watch and ward will be Rs 954 per day. The wages for highly skilled workers and armed watch and ward have been increased to Rs 1035 per day.

Supreme Court refuses to remove comments in Bilkis Bano case, Gujarat government’s application rejected
The Supreme Court on Thursday (26 September) rejected the Gujarat government’s petition in the Bilkis Bano case. In the petition, the Gujarat government had demanded that the comments made by the Supreme Court in the order related to the release of the culprits in this case should be removed. The Supreme Court had rejected the premature release of 11 people convicted of raping Bilkis Bano and killing her family during the 2002 Gujarat riots.
While giving the verdict, the bench of Justice Biwi Nagarathna and Justice Ujjal Bhuiyan said – Punishment is given to stop crime. We will also have to be concerned about the suffering of the victim. Gujarat government has no right to take the decision of release. He has misused his power and authority.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Raut guilty in defamation case, imprisoned for 15 days; Then the court postponed the punishment for 30 days
Metropolitan Magistrate Mazgaon has convicted Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut in a defamation case. He has been sentenced to 15 days imprisonment. Besides, a fine of Rs 25,000 was also imposed on him. This decision has been given in the case registered on the complaint lodged by Dr. Medha, wife of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya.
However, the court later postponed Raut’s sentence for 30 days and granted him bail.
Dr. Medha had said in the petition last year – Raut has made baseless and defamatory allegations that she and her husband are involved in a scam of Rs 100 crore related to the construction and maintenance of public toilets in Mira Bhayandar area of Mumbai.
Supreme Court grants bail to former Tamil Nadu minister Senthil Balaji in money laundering case
The Supreme Court on Thursday granted bail to former Tamil Nadu minister V Senthil Balaji. Senthil was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate last year in a money laundering case. The bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Augustine George Masih has imposed strict conditions for bail. The bench said – He has been in custody for more than eight months, so it would be right to direct the special court to dispose of the case within the time limit.
Balaji was arrested by the ED on June 14 last year in a case related to the cash-for-job scam. At that time Balaji was the Transport Minister in the AIADMK government. ED had filed a 3,000-page chargesheet against Balaji on August 12, 2023.
On 19 October 2023, the High Court had rejected Balaji’s previous bail plea. A local court has also rejected his bail petitions thrice.
Center extends AFSPA by six months in Nagaland and parts of Arunachal Pradesh
The central government has extended AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) by six months in parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. It has been extended for 6 months in three districts of Arunachal and some areas of Namsai district. AFSPA has been extended for 6 months in 8 districts and some areas of 5 districts of Nagaland.
AFSPA is implemented only in disturbed areas. At these places, security forces can arrest anyone without warrant. In many cases force may also be used. This law was passed on 11 September 1958 for the convenience of the security forces in the North-East. Due to increase in terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir in 1989, AFSPA was implemented here also in 1990. The central government also decides which areas will be disturbed.
