The bus fell into the river about 500 feet below the highway in Tanahun district of Nepal.
A bus from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh fell into the Marsyangdi river in Nepal on Friday (23 August). 27 passengers have died in the accident. 10 are injured. The injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital. There were more than 40 passengers in the bus.

The bus was going from Pokhara in Nepal to Kathmandu. Then at 11.30 am, it fell into the river about 500 feet below the highway at Aina Pahada in Tanahun district. The passengers in the bus were residents of Bhusaval in Maharashtra. All of them had gone to Nepal for a trip. Tanahun Chief District Officer Janardan Gautam said that some of the injured died during treatment.
Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Nepal Army are conducting search and rescue operations. A team of 45 Armed Police Force (APF) personnel is also present at the spot. A Nepal Army MI-17 helicopter carrying a medical team reached Tanahun from Kathmandu. 12 seriously injured passengers were airlifted to Kathmandu.
The Uttar Pradesh government has sent Maharajganj SDM to the spot.

3 buses from Maharashtra went on a Nepal trip
Gorakhpur DM Krishna Karunesh said that the bus that met with the accident belongs to Kesarwani Tour and Travels Agency of Gorakhpur. The number of the bus is UP-53 FT 7623. It is registered in the name of Shalini Kesarwani, wife of Saurabh Kesarwani, who lives in the Dharamshala Bazaar area of Gorakhpur.
About 4 months ago, 3 buses of Kesarwani Travels were booked from Maharashtra to go to Nepal. All the three buses reached Nepal on 20th August. They had to travel in Nepal for 10 days.
A bus fell into the river today. It is being said that the passengers in other buses are stranded in Mugling, Nepal. Efforts are being made to establish contact with them.
CM Yogi Adityanath asked for help
UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has given instructions to provide help in the Nepal bus accident. Relief Commissioner GS Naveen spoke to officials of the Nepal government. Coordination is being done with senior officers of the Indian Police stationed in Nepal.
The Relief Commissioner of the UP government said that this was a travel bus. Therefore, there is a possibility of people from UP and other states being in the bus. Information about the people is being collected by contacting the officials of Nepal. The SDM of Maharajganj has been sent to Nepal.

Bus owner Vishnu Kesarwani told that our three buses had gone to Nepal from Gorakhpur. These buses had people from Maharashtra. We had picked them up from Allahabad. From here we took them to Chitrakoot. Then we came to Ayodhya. From Ayodhya we went to Sunauli and Lumbini via Gorakhpur. From there we went to Pokhara. From Pokhara all the three buses were going to Kathmandu. One bus met with an accident near Mugling.
According to Vishnu Kesarwani, the driver’s name is Mustafa. His Indian and Nepali number plates are both switched off. There is no proof of him being alive yet. People from the Indian Embassy have reached there. The bus had insurance from both Nepal and India.
Landslide prone area of Tanahun Nepal
Nepal’s Tanahun district is an area where landslides keep happening. Out of its total 85 wards, 48 fall in the landslide risk zone. In June 2024, the Chief District Officer here, Janardan Gautam, had issued a traffic alert during the monsoon.
Gautam advised the tourists visiting this area from outside to be cautious during monsoon. This area falls in the high risk areas like landslides, floods, lightning and storms.
