The central government has formed a search committee to select names for the next Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). This committee will be chaired by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. The members of this committee will also be the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Personnel and Training Department.
CEC Rajiv Kumar will retire after completion of 65 years of age on 18 February.

Anna University Rape Case- Supreme Court stays High Court order on comments against police
The Supreme Court stayed the order of the Madras High Court in the rape case of Anna University. The High Court had ordered a departmental inquiry of FIR leak on December 28 with strict remarks against the Chennai Police Commissioner and other officials when the FIR leaked and the victim’s identity was revealed. However, SIT will continue its investigation.
The Supreme Court banned the Paragraphs of the High Court order 20, 21, 23 and 29 (9), including the police lapse. In Paragraph 29 (9), the High Court had directed the State and Home Secretary to initiate a departmental inquiry on the officials responsible for the lapse and negligence in duty under the service rules.
