America expressed concern about losing control over cars.Accused of gathering important information on Chinese and Russian car software.Cars with Chinese software may be banned from 2027.
New Delhi. America’s enmity with China and Russia has now come down to cars. The Joe Biden government of the United States is preparing to ban smart cars that come with software and technology from China and Russia. The US government has cited national security behind this step. Let us tell you, this is not the first time that China has had to face such restrictions. Earlier, the US government had also banned Chinese tech companies Huawei and ZTE, accusing them of surreptitiously monitoring its citizens.
The US Commerce Department is expected to propose a blanket ban on the use of Chinese hardware and software in connected and self-driving vehicles on US roads. The US government has expressed apprehension that Chinese companies could use their software to collect sensitive information about drivers and infrastructure.
America may lose control over cars
US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo told reporters in a conference call on Sunday that a US government investigation that began in February found that embedded software and hardware from China and Russia in US vehicles poses a range of national security risks, including Hacking involves gaining remote control of cars and stealing personal data of drivers.
He said, “In extreme circumstances, an adversary country could shut down or take control of all vehicles running on its software in the United States at the same time, which could lead to accidents or block roads. “
Ban may be imposed from 2027
According to a CNN report, this rule will not apply to cars with Chinese software already on the roads of America. According to the Commerce Department, the software ban will apply to vehicles manufactured from 2027 and the hardware ban will apply to vehicles manufactured from 2030.
The proposed regulatory action is part of a broader struggle between the world’s two largest economies, the United States and China, to secure supply chains for key future computing technologies, from semiconductors to AI software. China, in particular, has invested heavily in the connected car market, and advances made by Chinese manufacturers in Europe have put the US on edge.
The Chinese government has its own concerns about the data being collected by Tesla’s electric cars. For this reason, entry of Tesla vehicles is banned in many sensitive premises of China.
What are connected cars?
Connected car feature is available in today’s modern cars that run on the internet. Many features in it are controlled through software, Bluetooth and Internet. Modern cars, buses or trucks are coming with connected features whose data is recorded by companies so that facilities can be provided to the person driving it. This is a kind of network through which cars are connected and exchange information with the server. The process involves hardware and software that use Bluetooth, WiFi, and cellular technology.
There is a 30-day public comment period on this proposal, and the Commerce Department aims to issue a final regulation before the end of the Biden administration. The US government has said it will also release an economic analysis of the costs expected for automakers and consumers to comply with the proposed rule.
