A stampede at a religious event in Hathras district has sadly killed 116 people and injured over 300. The incident happened during a religious gathering (Satsang) led by Bhole Baba in Phulrai village on Tuesday evening.

The stampede started when too many devotees gathered to attend the Satsang. People rushed to touch Bhole Baba’s feet and collect soil from his path, causing many to fall into a nearby drain.

Many women and children were among the victims. Emergency services quickly arrived, and the injured were taken to hospitals in Agra, Etah, Kasganj, and Aligarh. So far, 72 of the 116 bodies have been identified.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath have announced ₹2 lakh each for the families of the deceased. Chief Minister Adityanath has also ordered a thorough investigation.

An FIR has been filed against the organizers of the Satsang, including Bhole Baba. The Uttar Pradesh government said the number of attendees was much higher than allowed.

The incident has caused widespread grief and anger. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed his condolences, and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary called for a review to prevent such events in the future.

District Magistrate Ashish Kumar said the district administration is investigating. Efforts are ongoing to identify the remaining victims and support their families. The Hathras District Administration has also provided helpline numbers for the public.
